BBC Radio Essex

I am very excited and a little nervous - in a good way - as I have been invited to join a discussion on BBC Essex radio tomorrow morning :-)

As I have previously posted, I am running a drop-in artist's book workshop at the launch of the Essex Book Festival 2012 at Chelmsford Central Library and now, I am pleased to add that I will be speaking on the panel during the Dave Monk Show on BBC Essex Radio.

The discussion will centre around the topic of image in books - an area of visual arts which interests me a great deal and is relevant to my work as a Book Artist.

Tune in from 10:00am tomorrow March 1st to listen to interviews with authors and listen to the discussion at 10:30am here.

If you come to the launch event pop over and say hello (unless I am actively engaged in live recorded radio debate!).

Inspiration Monday: Sky Nash

I met Sky Nash at the Book Club in Shoreditch when we appeared as guest bookbinding demonstrators at a University of the Arts London Book Club Event alumni event in 2010.

Sky is an imaginative artist and creates work with a great deal of (often dark!) humour and her style is highly personal.

I have not yet seen recent book works by Sky but hope to make it to the LCC Book Arts & Design final degree show later this year and view her most recent work.

A note of "Good Luck" to Sky for the final few months of study at LCC!

Who is your inspiration?

Dear Readers,

These are a few of my visual art inspirations.

I am interested to know who inspires you in the world of visual arts? - not influences but inspiration :-)

Please add ideas in the comments section or head to my Facebook page Mary Pullen | Between the Leaves and add ideas there.....

I look forward to sharing thoughts and I intend to rekindle my Inspiration Monday posts from next week!

Thank you for sharing

Artist in Residence at Jardine on Friday 17th February

I am so excited about my forthcoming sessions as Artist in Residence at Jardine Café & Bistro in Wivenhoe, Essex!!!!

Following an invitation by Cristian and Jo to hold a solo exhibition at Jardine, I have decided to expand my body of work One Line.

One Line is a series of illustrations drawn using experimental drawing techniques and 'live' on site in cafes.  I exhibited a set of One Line illustrations, drawn in the Hornbeam Centre Organic Café, as part of a group exhibition in the E17 Art Trail 2010.

My residency at Jardine offers a fantastic opportunity to enjoy the café environment, observe and record fleeting moments - if you are there on Friday 17th February do say hello - but please act naturally for drawing purposes! ;-)

The illustrations will be exhibited in my solo exhibition later on this year in May 2012....

PS check out the events page at Jardine - so much going on!

my workshop at the British Library 'Late' event March 2012

I am absolutely thrilled to have been invited Quentin Blakes recently established House of Illustration to run a workshop at the British Library 'Late' event ILLUMINATE! in March.

In response to the theme of the current exhibition Royal Manuscripts: The Genius of Illumination, I am drawing on my skills and knowledge of calligraphy, and on my passion for typography and illustration, to run a drop-in workshop entitled Book of Letters.

___________________________________________________________

Book of Letters: Renowned illustrator and educator Mary Pullen invites you to create your own illuminated letter drawing inspiration from traditional calligraphy, contemporary typography and the Royal Manuscripts on display.
___________________________________________________________
Illuminated letters, traditional illustration and calligraphy, modern typography, experimental drawing, inspiration from the exhibition - come along and use all of these to create a beautiful and striking illuminated letter to add to the Book of Letters.

Making the cover very soon.....

Here are the event details and you can book here (the event is selling out fast)
